What are Humanistic and Metaphysical Psychology? What is EMDR?

Humanistic Psychology

Humanistic Psychology is a school of thought that empathizes with the study of the whole person and their subjective experiences. It focuses on individual potential, personal growth, empowerment and the importance of meaning and purpose in life. It emerged as a reaction to behavioral and psychoanalysis, emphasizing free will, self-awareness and the inherent goodness of individuals.

Metaphysical Psychology

Metaphysical Psychology explores the connection between philosophical concepts, (particularly those related to Metaphysics, and their impact on human behavior and experience. It delves into how our understanding of reality, consciousness and their nature of existence shapes out thoughts, beliefs, and actions. This field also examines the potential for spiritual and intuitive awareness to influence well-being and personal growth.

EMDR

EMDR (Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) therapy is a type of psychotherapy designed to help people recover from traumatic or distressing experiences. It works by using bilateral stimulation, like eye movements to help the brain reprocess difficult memories, reducing their emotional impact and allowing for healing. Essentially, it helps the brain “unstick” traumatic memories that are causing ongoing distress.

I met with Joe consistency for about 2 years as I was going through the remnants of a contentious divorce with 3 children. My ex wife was very scorned and alienated my oldest child against me and I was in a very bad place. As we were discussing my past experiences that made me into the person I was, we discovered that growing up with divorced parents with addiction that the best form of treatment would be a program called ACOA (Adult Children of Alcoholics). As we worked through the program I was able to learn and love my parents for who they were as they were doing the best job they could, and not my thoughts on who they should have been. What a freeing feeling to discover as I let go of my expectation of them and realized they are human too. Every session Joe would greet me with positive compliments and every time I would just shrug it off as not significant until I started to believe that I am worth more than what I thought of myself. I learned to love my messed up self and my confidence boosted and I started focusing on the positive things in my life and not the negative. It's been about 2 years since we last met and the lessons I learned through the ACOA program and his help in guiding me to love myself has continued to grow. Joe is a very genuine person and wants to help everyone whom he comes in contact with. I will be forever grateful for the guidance that he provided me to help me live a much better and fulfilling life. Thank you, Joe.

Joe was the real deal. He guided me through addiction and codependency challenges. He addressed me respectfully and professionally. It also helped that Joe has working knowledge in 12 step programs. Today I am clean and sober, a father and husband, gainfully employed.

I was anxious as a first responder, especially through covid. I experienced panic attacks and almost chose to go on workers comp. I went to Dr. Joe, he gave me hope when I had none. I told my husband I can’t work or function anymore. I was using food as a comfort coping skill. It took consistent effort on my part, Joe will work as hard as I did. He believed I could transcend the wounds of being raised in an alcoholic home. Joe doesn’t blow smoke, he cares, he’s sincere and very down-to-earth knowledgeable. He explained he does not believe in band aid approach unless its needed to get to the source of the symptom. In the past I got all this technical and common interaction from past therapists, and that approach is why I saw so many therapists in the past. He explained it’s about getting to the source of my pain and trauma.

Joseph is positive and genuine, his doesn’t speak to me as separate or some highly educated guy who has all the book answers. He brings life experience, listens, sometimes challenges and walks each step with me. I looked.

Dr Joe is genuinely interested in every word I say. I feel he cares. He sees me when I can’t see me. We laughed too. He explained that therapy doesn’t have to be dark and painful although we may visit these places for healing, we laughed a lot.

Counseling Empowerment helped me, and my family address my gambling addiction. Much like alcoholism and addiction it affects the entire family. My wife had enough. The kids had enough. It was no easy thing for a compulsive addict like me. I worked two full time jobs and was always broke. It took acceptance and commitment on my part. Joe provides guidance, assurance and commitment. I had to show up and do the work and it wasn’t an overnight solution. The suggestions were uncomfortable until they became comfortable. Today, I spend quality time with my wife, 2 daughters and son. It’s a freedom I have been trying to get for years. I still get urges to bet but I have the power now to not act on it.
